... you definitely need KeyKit, version 6.6b or later (current is 7.4d), to run GeoMaestro. More precisely, you need KeyKit 7.2 or newer to run this version of GeoMaestro; see at the bottom of this page for older versions.

... on Windows, I recommend Metapad as a (very) good replacement for the Notepad editor.
